Asthma gone after 40 years!

November 19, 2013

In the last nineteen years, I have been asked many times to recount my own experience with asthma and how I used herbal products to stay healthy.  Here is my reply which I hope will help millions of people who are suffering from this dreadful disease which killed famous singer Teresa Tang.

As a child, I inherited my mother's asthma.  I missed classes all the time and was especially sick in the Spring and Fall.  Except for a few years during adolescence, my asthma troubled me for more than 40 years.  In 1981, I had such a bad asthma attack that I was hospitalized for a week.  No doctor could help me get rid of my asthma.  Some of the drugs prescribed to relieve the symptoms kept me awake all night, and I developed insomnia.  As I was so weak, I got infections in my throat, colds, and flu very frequently.  Whenever someone had a cold, I would certainly pick it up and had to suffer through the sinus headache for two or three weeks at a time, followed by cough and sometimes an asthma attack.  Every Spring and Fall I got severe allergies.  I sneezed every two minutes and my sinus was completely clogged.  My eyes were swollen.  I thought I had to live with it for the rest of my life.  I got used to visiting doctors at least six to ten times a year, and could not participate in any kind of sports.

In 1995, I happened to come across Reishi and Cordyceps.  Being trained as a scientist I did not believe in herbal medicine for the lack of clinical studies on purified compounds. However, the brochures attracted my attention because they claimed to have no side effect.  I studied several books written on Reishi and Cordyceps and was amazed to find that there had been 30 years of respectible scientific studies in the East and the West, by top-notch scientists in major universities.  So I decided to give it a try.  I started in May 1995 and had no more need to receive treatment from any doctor ever since.  My asthma is completely gone and I have no more allergy, for nineteen years now!

Cordyceps is traditionally used in China as a cough suppressant, an expectorant, and an anti-asthmatic.  The use of Cordyceps in the treatment of asthma may be due to its relaxant activity on the trachea.  At the Meiji Institute of Health Science in Japan in 1995, researchers found that an extract of Cordyceps can inhibit tracheal muscle contractions and relax the airways of rats.  The cultured fungus (mycelial extract) was six times more potent than the wild fungus.  They concluded that the mycelial extract of Cordyceps seems to "facilitate the increase in the pulmonary ventilation during movement."

The Cordyceps I am taking is a pure extract from the mycelium of Cordyceps Sinensis (Cs-4 strain), with a well-balanced mixture of active ingredients particularly rich in adenosine content.

Reishi suppresses asthma because it contains several anti-allergic agents that inhibit the release of histamine from mast cells.  In an experiment with Guinea Pigs, the more Reishi was administered, the more histamine release was inhibited.  Other experiments in China found Reishi preparations relaxed smooth muscles induced to constrict by histamine.  Moreover, Reishi is effective for all four types of allergy.  However, a balanced diet is also important, as other nutrients are also essential for the prevention of allergies.  Vitamin C and dietary sulfur are especially important, as are the Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA.

I would suggest that anyone suffering from asthma takes appropriate doses of Reishi and Cordyceps 3 times a day, with non-acidic vitamin C.  He/she should also take Omega-3 Fish Oil after meals.  It may take 2 months to feel the difference, but the wait will be worthwhile.

Good health!
