Alyssa Baldwin is a 9-year-old little girl who suffered from a terminal illness called Aplastic Anemia (her bone marrow could not produce blood) for 7 years.

In March 1997, Alyssa was treated at one of the best hospitals in America, Johns Hopkins Hospital, using the most advanced medicine (High-dose Cyclophosphamide and GCSF) for 3 months. But the treatment failed and Alyssa needed injection of platelets about every 4 days and a blood transfusion every 6-8 days. Her ANC (Absolute Neutrophil Count) had been under 500/mm3 (normally the minimum is 1,500) for 2 years.

Family friend John found Dr. Ng on Internet in July 1996.  Dr. Ng spent a lot of time explaining how Reishi, Placenta, and Cordyceps could help Alyssa, and cited journal references to support his arguments. But Alyssa's grandfather Frank was reluctant to let Alyssa try Reishi because:

"The frightening part is that they realized that mushroom (and also cordyceps) are Fungi. An aplastic anemia patient that they knew died a few weeks ago because a fungus started to attack or eat away at her and she ended up dieing."

More than a year went by, after all western treatments have failed and the doctors have given up, before Frank came back to Dr. Ng for more information. Dr. Ng did his best to encourage him with solid evidences from the scientific literature. After taking Reishi, Placenta, and Cordyceps, Alyssa gradually recovered to a point when she did not need blood transfusion for 150 days, and her ANC increased to 1,300.

However, her health could not be maintained for more than 150 days. At the end of June 1998, Alyssa got an infection and needed blood transfusions and platelets again. Then at the end of April 1999, Alyssa's ANC count began to drop to dangerous levels:

WBC 1.82 K/ul (normal range 4.60-10.2)
RBC 2.01 M/ul (normal range 4.06-6.13)

On April 28, 1999, Alyssa was in the hospital again because she had a sinusitis infection. She had a fever at 103 and her ANC dropped to 230. From April 28 to June 23, Alyssa's counts were very low ... ANC ranged from 350-550 and she was always borderline in needing blood and platelets.

Dr. Ng did a chemical analysis on the American Reishi that Alyssa had been taking and was concerned to find almost no triterpenoid and beta-D-glucan, the active ingredients most important for stimulating the production of blood cells. Perhaps the amount of active ingredients in the American product was inconsistent.
